Operetta Restaurant

Operetta Restaurant is an award-winning dining establishment that masterfully blends theatrical elements with contemporary restaurant design, drawing inspiration from light opera and 17th-18th century Italian architectural styles. Located in Hong Kong, this sophisticated 480.7-square-meter space represents an innovative fusion of performing arts and culinary experience, conceptualized and executed by design director Monique Lee and designer Leo Chan. The restaurant's distinctive design philosophy centers around the metaphorical concept of the eye, manifested through various architectural elements that facilitate interaction between culinary performers and dining audiences. The entrance features a dramatic eye-shaped portal, inspired by the Phantom of the Opera, which leads guests through a classically styled front hall adorned with traditional architectural elements such as domes and arcs. The interior seamlessly integrates traditional materials like wood, patterned fabrics, and bricks with modern innovations including an advanced lighting system, steel constructions, and mirrors. Notable features include brass-plated mirror steel components, gypsum elements, and fabric treatments that undergo specialized processes of molding, stamping, and laser cutting to create the distinctive false ceiling with oval domes, an extenzo stretch ceiling, and various arc-shaped decorative elements. A particularly innovative element is the switchable glass eye in the dining hall, which becomes transparent during dinner service to reveal the culinary artistry in the kitchen. The project, completed in 2016, overcame significant technical challenges in drainage system modification and the installation of a floor-to-ceiling wine cabinet, earning recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category for its exceptional integration of theatrical elements with functional dining space design.
