Open Packaging Sleeves is an innovative packaging design solution created by Dutch designer Koen van Rijen, consisting of custom-made sleeves designed to house six different photography magazines. This sophisticated packaging system, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, exemplifies minimalist design principles while incorporating clever interactive elements. The sleeves are crafted from thick, heavy anthracite cardboard featuring visible fibers that create a natural, tactile quality, complementing the raw emotional content of the photography magazines they contain. The design's distinguishing characteristic lies in its ingenious implementation of negative space, where two sleeves, when placed adjacent to each other, reveal the letter O through strategic cut-outs, forming part of the word open. Each sleeve is meticulously handcrafted and features screen-printed numbers from 1 to 80, corresponding to the limited subscriber base, with each unit being personally stamped during presentation to ensure uniqueness. The dimensions of 220mm width, 55mm depth, and 310mm height were carefully calculated to provide optimal protection for the contained magazines while maintaining aesthetic proportions. The design successfully balances functional requirements with artistic elements, employing a striking contrast between the dark anthracite base material and neon pastel ink for numbering, reflecting the dramatic light and contrast present in the enclosed photographic works. The sleeves incorporate an intuitive sliding mechanism where the inner sleeve can be extracted through a purposefully designed gap in the outer sleeve, creating an engaging user experience that mirrors the act of discovery inherent in photography.
