Onorio Longhi
Onorio Longhi was an Italian architect who lived during the Baroque period. He was born in 1568 in Viggiù, a town in the Lombardy region of Italy. Longhi was a pupil of the famous architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, and he worked with him on the construction of the Church of the Gesù in Rome. Longhi's architectural style was characterized by a blend of classical elements and Baroque ornamentation. He was known for his attention to detail and his ability to create harmonious and balanced compositions. Longhi's most famous work is the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome, which he designed in collaboration with his brother Martino. The church is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, with its dramatic façade, ornate interior, and stunning frescoes by artists such as Caravaggio and Raphael. Longhi also designed the Palazzo Doria Pamphili and the Church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami, both located in Rome. His other notable works include the façade of the Church of the Gesù and the Church of Santa Maria della Grazie in Milan. In addition to his work as an architect, Longhi was also a writer and a scholar. He wrote several treatises on architecture, including Discorsi sopra l'antichità di Roma (Discourses on the Antiquity of Rome), which was published posthumously in 1624. The treatise is a comprehensive study of the architecture and urban planning of ancient Rome, and it remains an important source of information for scholars today. Longhi died in Rome in 1619, leaving behind a legacy of innovative and influential architectural designs. His work continues to inspire architects and artists around the world, and his contributions to the field of architecture are still celebrated today.
