One Year Project Villa
One Year Project Villa is an innovative architectural masterpiece located in Inawashiro, Fukushima, Japan, that exemplifies a harmonious integration between human habitation and natural environment. This remarkable residential structure, designed by Kotaro Anzai, derives its name from the year-long construction process that encompassed every aspect of its creation, from tree cutting to final assembly, embodying a profound philosophical approach to sustainable architecture. The villa's distinctive structural design features steel posts emerging at various angles from local Inawashiro volcanic rocks, which serve as isolated footings capable of withstanding the region's substantial 2-meter snow loads during winter. This architectural approach mirrors the surrounding forest's natural geometry, establishing a metaphorical dialogue between built form and nature. The elevated structure, supported by a sophisticated system of posts connected to wooden lattice-work stilt floor and square roof surfaces, creates an open, transparent living space that maintains visual continuity with its forest setting. The project, completed in 2016, represents a paradigm shift in architectural philosophy, emphasizing the concept of borrowing rather than taking from nature, incorporating a commitment to environmental stewardship through the replanting of harvested trees for future generations. The villa's design, which earned the prestigious Platinum A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, showcases exceptional innovation in its 52.06-square-meter floor plan, featuring a unique bridge connecting two building blocks that enables inhabitants to experience nature through all five senses. The structure's thoughtful design allows for year-round enjoyment of the natural environment, providing versatile spaces for activities ranging from summer barbecues to winter gatherings around the stove, while maintaining a minimal building coverage ratio of 21.03% on its 300-square-meter site.
