On Yasai Food and Beverage is an award-winning Japanese restaurant interior design project that masterfully blends traditional Japanese architectural elements with contemporary dining experiences. The 3,200-square-foot space, designed by Vincent Chi-Wai Chiang and Keith Wong Ho Lau, embodies the concept of Meet in Blossom, inspired by the romantic imagery of cherry blossoms falling outside a traditional Japanese teahouse. The interior showcases sophisticated architectural features including light oak finishes, striped wall treatments, and varying sizes of cherry blossom motifs integrated with gray brick elements. A distinctive installation featuring thousands of Japanese Tea Whisks creates an unprecedented artistic statement, enhanced by carefully considered ambient lighting that produces captivating shadow effects. The design overcomes spatial challenges through innovative solutions, such as strategically placed Japanese Sake display cabinets that address a challenging triangular area near the main entrance while enhancing functionality. The ceiling's height limitations are elegantly resolved through the use of slender strips in frames and lighting fixtures, creating an enhanced sense of vertical space. The layout prioritizes operational efficiency with carefully planned seating arrangements and corridor dimensions, while encouraging guest interaction through accessible wine display areas. The project, completed in 2018, earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its excellence in spatial design, material selection, and innovative approach to traditional Japanese dining aesthetics. The design successfully creates a warm, inviting atmosphere that facilitates social gathering and dining experiences, while maintaining practical considerations for humidity control and material durability in a Shabu Shabu restaurant environment.
