Olwen House Low Rise Residential is an innovative architectural project located in Da Nang, Vietnam, that masterfully integrates traditional Vietnamese architectural elements with contemporary design principles. This Silver A' Design Award-winning residential structure, completed in 2018, spans 72 square meters with dimensions of 4.6 meters in width, 16.0 meters in length, and reaches a height of 12.3 meters. The design philosophy draws inspiration from traditional countryside dwellings of central Vietnam and the iconic shophouses of Hoi An, incorporating cultural and spiritual values while addressing modern urban challenges. The structure features a distinctive front garden that serves as a thermal buffer zone, effectively moderating interior temperatures and providing protection from rainfall. The architectural composition employs natural materials including wood, raw concrete, and clay roof tiles, complemented by steel curtain walls and clear glass partitions that promote visual connectivity between spaces. The vertical arrangement of the house strategically positions private areas on the third floor, with working spaces occupying the first and second levels, connected by a prominent red staircase on the terrace. A notable feature is the attic floor playground adorned with vernacular patterns, creating a nostalgic connection to Vietnamese heritage. The design successfully addresses urban challenges such as air pollution and noise through its thoughtful spatial organization, while maintaining an open, welcoming facade that encourages community interaction. The implementation of glass partition walls instead of rigid barriers creates functional divisions while preserving visual continuity throughout the interior spaces, exemplifying a harmonious balance between privacy and openness.
