Born in Vaasa in 1880, Backstrom received his artistic education in Paris, where he studied under the tutelage of Henri Lebasque, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Claude Monet. His eight-year stay in Paris allowed him to explore a wide range of subjects, from landscapes and still lifes to rural scenes. Backstrom's style of painting is characterized by his ability to capture the essence of everyday life in the Finnish countryside. He was known for his use of light and color to create a sense of warmth and intimacy in his paintings. His works often feature people engaged in everyday activities such as cooking, eating, and socializing. His paintings are imbued with a sense of nostalgia and a deep appreciation for the simple pleasures of life. In addition to his paintings, Backstrom was also an accomplished illustrator and graphic artist. He created illustrations for several Finnish magazines and newspapers, including the popular magazine Päivälehti. His illustrations were known for their humor and whimsy, and often featured scenes from everyday life. Despite his success as an artist, Backstrom remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to paint and create until his death in 1947. Today, his works can be found in museums and private collections around the world, and his legacy as one of Finland's most beloved artists continues to endure.
