Old Yacht Club Private House
Old Yacht Club Private House is a masterfully renovated architectural project that transformed a historic 1919 yacht club building into a contemporary residential space while preserving its cultural heritage and maritime legacy. Located on the coast of Maine, this adaptive reuse project exemplifies thoughtful architectural intervention, seamlessly blending historical preservation with modern design elements. The structure, which remained abandoned for years after the club's relocation in 1946, underwent a comprehensive renovation that maintained its original footprint of 9.75 x 13.7 meters while introducing innovative architectural solutions. The renovation's centerpiece features the strategic replacement of a corner section with large sliding glass panels and the addition of two glass dormers, dramatically transforming the building's relationship with natural light and its surroundings. This architectural intervention creates a dual effect: during daylight hours, it allows sunlight to penetrate deep into the living spaces, while at night, the structure serves as a luminous coastal beacon, symbolizing the successful revival of its historical significance. The project, which commenced design in 2018 and was completed in 2023, required extensive structural rehabilitation, including foundation repairs and the implementation of new support systems to ensure long-term durability. The renovation approach carefully addressed the philosophical challenge of maintaining historical authenticity while adapting to contemporary residential needs, developing an architectural language that clearly distinguishes between original and new elements while maintaining harmony between them. This exceptional transformation was recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to architectural preservation and adaptive reuse.
