Oil Street Art Space Wayfinding System
Oil Street Art Space Wayfinding System is an innovative environmental graphic design solution that seamlessly integrates directional signage within a historically significant art space, combining functionality with aesthetic sensitivity. Designed by Kimhung Choi and Thomas Siu, this comprehensive wayfinding system serves as a visual navigation framework for a cultural complex housed in a Grade II historic building, featuring a distinctive red-brick facade and tile roof, alongside a contemporary two-story extension. The system's design language emerges from a thoughtful transformation of the space's logo, incorporating three distinct surface areas that symbolize the dynamic and diverse nature of the artistic environment. Utilizing powder-coated stainless steel with debossed letters filled with paint, the signage system demonstrates exceptional consideration for the preservation of architectural heritage while fulfilling modern wayfinding requirements. The designers chose a sophisticated black color scheme that harmoniously complements both the historic red-brick features and contemporary exhibition spaces, with strategic accent colors applied to enhance visual hierarchy and brand identity. A notable aspect of the design is its innovative installation methodology, specifically developed to minimize impact on the historical structure while ensuring future maintenance flexibility. The system, which garnered recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, exemplifies how wayfinding design can enhance visitor experience while respecting architectural heritage. The project's success lies in its ability to create an approachable and manageable signage system that effectively guides visitors through various spaces while maintaining visual consistency and cultural sensitivity.
