Nyoi Nyokki Japanese Izakaya Pub is an award-winning architectural interior design project located on the second floor of a historic building in Beijing, exemplifying a sophisticated fusion of traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary design principles. The 100-square-meter space, completed in September 2015 by Japanese architect Yuichiro Imafuku, features distinctive 30mm thick natural wood louvers that clad the walls and ceilings, creating an intimate dining atmosphere that accommodates 38 seats. The design's centerpiece showcases an original aged wall, thoughtfully preserved and revealed from former coverings, now serving as a dramatic backdrop for illuminated liquor bottles displayed on 3mm thick black steel plate shelves. The establishment's spatial hierarchy is masterfully defined through the strategic placement of the bar counter, which features white artificial marble and wooden louvers, complemented by suspended glass pendant lights. The design demonstrates exceptional attention to functional details, with air conditioning and audio systems discreetly concealed within the upper portions of the louvered cabinets. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, successfully addresses the challenge of creating a serene dining environment within a bustling urban context through its sophisticated entry sequence, elevated dining area, and careful material selection that embodies the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic philosophy through the harmonious combination of aged walls, natural wood, and steel elements.
