NS GAIA AW-17 Garment design is an innovative contemporary womenswear collection that exemplifies sustainable fashion principles through its thoughtful integration of upcycled materials and traditional craftsmanship. This groundbreaking design project, created between September 2016 and February 2017, draws profound inspiration from nature photography and the concept of meta-modernization, particularly exploring the relationship between humanity and the environment. The collection's aesthetic foundation stems from deep, dark tones juxtaposed with vibrant elements, reflecting the transformative journey of natural elements in our hybrid world. A distinguishing feature of this design is its incorporation of the heritage craft technique called Dakmanda, a traditional dying method from Meghalaya, India, which had previously remained undocumented. The garments are meticulously crafted using natural, upcycled, and recycled fiber fabrics, including innovative combinations of silk, cotton, and muga to create unique ikat effects through tie-dying techniques. The collection demonstrates exceptional technical innovation in its approach to waste reduction, utilizing factory trim waste for surface development and incorporating recycled fibers such as rayon viscose, cotton viscose, and silk viscose. This sustainable approach earned the design a Silver A' Design Award in the Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design category in 2018, recognizing its contribution to slow fashion and environmental consciousness. The collection, designed in UK size 8, represents a harmonious blend of contemporary design aesthetics with traditional craftsmanship, while maintaining a strong commitment to minimizing environmental impact through mindful production methods.
