Now Album Design

Now Album Design

Now Album Design is an innovative album packaging concept that merges traditional Chinese typography with contemporary digital design methodologies. Created by visual designer Yijia Xie, this groundbreaking project explores the intersection of cultural heritage and modern technology through a unique combination of Chinese calligraphy, digital collage, and generative coding. The design, which won an Iron A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, features a sophisticated approach to album packaging where each Chinese character from the song titles—including Universe, Rain, Believe, Eyes, Moon, and Star—undergoes algorithmic transformation to create thousands of unique variations. The 4.25 x 4.25-inch format encompasses six EP cover designs, a lyrics book, and distinctive packaging elements, all unified by the experimental fusion of traditional and digital aesthetics. This innovative approach ensures that each package becomes a unique artifact, as the computer-generated variations produce individual designs for every copy. The project, completed between September 2021 and January 2022, represents a significant advancement in album design by successfully balancing randomness with order, while effectively communicating the musician's themes of self-awareness, beliefs, truth, and personal choice. The design's significance lies in its pioneering exploration of Chinese character design's future possibilities, demonstrating how cultural elements can be reimagined through contemporary digital processes while maintaining their essential artistic integrity.
