Nona Chair

nona Chair is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies the fusion of cultural heritage and contemporary aesthetics, created by Malaysian designer Keson Leong. This organically shaped seating solution draws inspiration from the Malaysian term nona, meaning damsel, and pays homage to the traditional craftswomanship of Malaysian mat weaving while embracing avant-garde design principles. The chair's distinctive features include a meticulously sculpted seat that harmoniously follows feminine curves, achieving an exceptional balance between lightness, artistry, and ergonomic comfort. The design showcases a thoughtfully engineered backrest characterized by its thin profile and organic curvature, which flows seamlessly into the curvaceous seat, embodying feminine elegance. Crafted from locally sourced and legally harvested wood, the chair demonstrates environmental consciousness while maintaining structural integrity. The production process integrates advanced technology, utilizing three different CAD software platforms - Solidworks, Rhino, and 3DMax - to optimize design elements, while the manufacturing employs sophisticated 5-axis CNC machining for precise execution and superior surface finishing. With dimensions of 475mm in width, 560mm in depth, and 810mm in height, the chair's proportions are carefully calculated to minimize encumbrance during seating while maintaining a striking visual presence. The design's distinctive silhouette features a small waist and slim legs that incorporate quasi-feminine detailing, resulting in a courageous yet elegant aesthetic. This remarkable piece of furniture design earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2017, acknowledging its innovative approach to combining cultural inspiration with modern design methodology.
