Nodal Editing
Nodal Editing is a non-linear, procedural approach to digital image and video post-production that utilizes node-based compositing. In this paradigm, the editing process is represented as a network of interconnected nodes, each encapsulating a specific operation or effect. These nodes can be connected in various ways to create complex visual effects, color corrections, and image manipulations. The nodal editing workflow offers a high degree of flexibility and control, enabling artists to build intricate compositing pipelines by connecting and rearranging nodes in a visual, intuitive manner. This approach allows for non-destructive editing, as the original image data remains unchanged, and the effects are applied in real-time as the data flows through the node network. Nodal editing has become a standard in the visual effects and motion graphics industries, particularly in high-end post-production for film, television, and video games. It facilitates collaborative workflows, as different artists can work on separate parts of the node tree simultaneously. The node-based structure also promotes the creation of reusable templates and the sharing of specific effects or color grading setups across projects. Trivia: The first node-based compositing software, NUKE, was developed in-house at Digital Domain in 1993 for use on the film True Lies.
