Nike X Clot Special Shoebox Design

For the collaboration capsule between Nike and Clot Rose Gold in 2020, Footwear Designer, Storyteller Ye Shen was tapped to enrich the context and storytelling of the capsule by designing a limited edition footwear packaging. The Nike x Clot capsule celebrates Chinese culture and elements with Clot's signature woven silk pattern, which became the inspiration springboard for Shen's design. As widely known, silk serves as a culturally significant type of fabric in traditional Chinese garment design, especially Qi Pao. Qi Pao is a female formal wear that not only uses silk as its main fabric but also employs a special knot, Pan Kou, or Frog Knot as known in the west, which consists of 2 parts of sewn fabric stripes tied into intricate patterns, performing the task of a button. The origin of Pan Kou can trace back to as early as the Song Dynasty. The limited edition shoebox Shen designed utilized rosewood as its body material and double door closure on the top lid. As the finishing touch, Shen infused Pan Kou into the wooden panels to secure the closure, highlighting its elegant functionality and intricate interactivity.
