Nicolas De Staël
Nicolas de Staël is considered to be one of the most influential and groundbreaking abstract painters of the twentieth century and his works are held in high regard for their simple yet beautiful melodies of colour. His abstract art was groundbreaking for its time, contrasting with the popular traditions of figurative painting during the modernist period. In his lifetime, Nicolas de Staël achieved a unique style of painting, defined by his free and spontaneous application of paint, allowing for a wide range of colours and shades which speak to his viewers emotionally. His best known works are “Upright Cross” (1953), “Landscape with White Houses” (1955) and “Albatross” (1955).
