Nickel-cadmium Storage Batteries
Nickel-cadmium storage batteries, also known as NiCad batteries, are rechargeable batteries that use nickel oxide hydroxide and metallic cadmium as electrodes. They are one of the oldest types of rechargeable batteries and have been used in various applications since the early 20th century. NiCad batteries are known for their high energy density, long cycle life, and ability to deliver high current. The construction of a NiCad battery consists of a positive electrode made of nickel oxide hydroxide, a negative electrode made of cadmium, and an electrolyte made of potassium hydroxide. The electrodes are separated by a porous separator that allows the flow of ions between them. During charging, the cadmium electrode is oxidized and the nickel oxide hydroxide electrode is reduced, storing energy in the battery. During discharge, the opposite reaction occurs, releasing the stored energy. NiCad batteries have several advantages over other types of rechargeable batteries. They have a long cycle life, which means they can be recharged and discharged many times without significant degradation. They also have a high discharge rate, which makes them suitable for high-drain applications such as power tools and emergency lighting. Additionally, they can operate in a wide range of temperatures and are relatively inexpensive compared to other types of rechargeable batteries. However, NiCad batteries also have some drawbacks. They are known for their memory effect, which means that if they are not fully discharged before recharging, their capacity may be reduced. They also contain toxic materials such as cadmium, which can be harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly. In recent years, NiCad batteries have been largely replaced by newer types of rechargeable batteries, such as nickel-metal hydride and lithium-ion batteries.
