Nest Residence

Nest Residence

Nest Residence is an architecturally distinctive residential project located in Yilan, Taiwan, conceived as a retirement sanctuary that masterfully integrates local materials and cultural elements with contemporary design principles. The residence's most striking feature is its dual slanted roof volumes, reminiscent of swallow wings in flight, which pays homage to the concept of returning home while incorporating traditional black tile roofing crafted from Yilan's signature seven-cent stone integrated with recycled glass. The structure demonstrates exceptional spatial innovation through its multi-level design, featuring suspended curved staircases, strategically placed skylights, and thoughtfully designed patios that create a seamless flow between interior and exterior spaces. Despite challenging coastal conditions and potential soil liquefaction concerns, the design successfully incorporates robust structural solutions while maintaining aesthetic integrity. The interior architecture extends the surrounding paddy field landscape indoors, creating a harmonious dialogue between the built environment and natural surroundings. A notable element is the prayer room, which emanates a warm, guiding light across the fields, symbolizing a beacon for family members returning home. The residence, which won the Iron A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, exemplifies sustainable architecture through its use of local and recycled materials, while addressing practical concerns such as corrosion resistance and water management through innovative construction techniques. The project, completed in 2018, stands as a testament to thoughtful architectural design that balances functional requirements with cultural sensitivity and environmental consciousness.
