Neo-Oriental Art Sales Center
Neo-Oriental Art Sales Center is an exemplary architectural and interior design project that masterfully reimagines traditional Chinese Song Dynasty aesthetics within a contemporary context. Located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Anshun Road in Kaifeng, China, this sophisticated space seamlessly integrates cultural heritage with modern functionality, completed in June 2019 by architect Chien Sen Wu. The design philosophy centers on the concept of voidness aesthetics, a fundamental principle of Song Dynasty art, manifested through innovative spatial arrangements and reflecting water features in the courtyard. The center's distinctive design elements include a carefully curated sequence of spaces that mirror the experiential journey through traditional Chinese gardens, incorporating elements of looking, wearing, circling, scene framing, and borrowed scenery. The material palette is thoughtfully selected, featuring reflective black stone that metaphorically represents an inkwell, Georgian wired cast glass in latticed doors, and white oak walls that create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The space is enhanced by sophisticated lighting solutions, with indirect and diffused illumination creating a distinctly Asian ambiance that emphasizes horizontal spatial flow. Notable features include a liquid display screen that unfolds like an ancient painting's major axis, and artistic elements such as a hand-painted bluebird on silk that appears to move subtly. The project, which won a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, successfully transforms the traditional sales center concept into a multifunctional space that serves as an art gallery, teahouse, and immersive cultural experience, effectively capturing the essence of Song Dynasty aestheticism while meeting contemporary commercial needs.
