National Register Of Historic Districts

The National Register of Historic Districts is a program established by the United States government to recognize and preserve buildings, objects, sites, and districts of national significance in terms of their architecture, engineering, or cultural importance. This program was established under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and is administered by the National Park Service in partnership with state and local governments. The National Register of Historic Districts is the most comprehensive source of information on the nation's historic places, and it is used to identify and protect the nation's cultural resources. One of the key aspects of the National Register of Historic Districts is its criteria for inclusion. Properties must meet at least one of four criteria to be eligible for inclusion: they must be associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history; they must be associated with the lives of significant persons in our past; they must embody the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction, or represent the work of a master; or they must have yielded, or be likely to yield, information important in prehistory or history. Another important aspect of the National Register of Historic Districts is its role in the planning of federal and state-funded projects. The listings are used to identify properties that may be affected by proposed projects, and to ensure that those properties are considered in the planning process. The National Register of Historic Districts is also used to determine eligibility for certain grant programs, tax benefits, and other reservations. In addition to its practical applications, the National Register of Historic Districts plays an important role in preserving the history and character of important areas. By recognizing and cataloguing buildings, objects, sites, and districts of significance in the country's architectural and cultural heritage, the program helps to ensure that these resources are protected for future generations.
