NAGOMI Welfare Facilities
NAGOMI Welfare Facilities is an innovative architectural project completed in 2021 in Japan's Miyagi prefecture, embodying the Japanese concept of 'nagomi' (meaning to ease the mind) through its distinctive curved design and sloping roof structure. This Silver A' Design Award-winning welfare complex spans 1,691 square meters across two floors, masterfully integrating various functional spaces including a cafeteria, event venues, gallery, and relaxation areas within a harmonious architectural composition. The facility's design demonstrates exceptional consideration for environmental factors, incorporating careful analysis of seasonal wind patterns, snow accumulation, and solar exposure to create an optimal layout. The building's distinctive form features a trussed structure supporting two wings, creating an expansive cafeteria space characterized by a randomly patterned wooden ceiling that contrasts effectively with the surrounding industrial architecture. The design philosophy emphasizes accessibility and user comfort, particularly during adverse weather conditions, while the structural planning enables open spaces that promote employee interaction and well-being. Architects Ko Uehara, Yuji Iida, and Ikuhiro Ayatsuka developed an innovative single-span sectional design that efficiently accommodates diverse functions and extended flow lines, while the building's form draws inspiration from rechargeable battery cells, reflecting its industrial context. The facility's sophisticated air conditioning system ensures comfort throughout the large spaces, while the thoughtful integration of interior and exterior elements creates a cohesive environment that harmonizes with the surrounding landscape and nature, earning recognition at the A' Design Award and Competition for its excellence in architectural design.
