Multiple Stage Competitions
Research has shown evidence towards the effectiveness of two-stage competitions for increased performance when compared to one-stage competitions, especially when the competition is very big (attracting many entries and participants). Many papers that discuss the auctions and other competition mechanisms; i.e. two-phase design competitions state that two-phase competitions may have advantages over a one-stage competitions if organizations are requested to provide a very detailed entry especially. Knowing that there are a limited number of competitors, participants could feel that they have higher chances winning the contest and therefore they could be more inclined to put in a lot of effort to come up with a nice entry i.e., limiting the number of competitors may increase the quality of the submissions by pushing the entrants. For the specific case of design competitions, conducted case studies and observations made are aligned in this manner, however, since added stages of competitions impose significant additional organizational costs, single stage competitions are more commonly observed. Since difficulty of tasks decrease the number of participants, organizers could find it a clever approach to organize multiple design competitions, dividing different time-frame tasks as different competition stages or even separate competitions instead of organizing multiple stage competitions which would have higher efficiency.
