MOON FLOWER Lighting

MOON FLOWER Lighting

MOON FLOWER Lighting is an innovative cultural heritage design that harmoniously merges traditional Korean craftsmanship with contemporary lighting technology. This sophisticated lighting fixture, created by designer SANG YOON KIM, draws inspiration from the traditional Korean oil lantern cho long bool and incorporates natural elements with modern engineering. The design features a meticulously crafted bamboo joint structure, where multiple perforations and organic elements symbolize the stamens of a moon flower, creating an intricate interplay of light and shadow. The fixture comprises three primary components: a bamboo joint with LED lighting, a bamboo branch, and a round wooden base, measuring 310mm in width, 50mm in depth, and 440mm in height. The technical innovation lies in its aluminum inner lighting component, precision-carved using CNC machinery and finished with anodizing treatment. A distinctive feature of this design is its use of traditional Korean handmade mulberry paper (Han-ji) for the back reflection, which creates a uniquely subtle, moon-like illumination characteristic of Korean aesthetic sensibility. This cultural fusion earned the design an Iron A' Design Award in the Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design category, recognizing its achievement in preserving traditional craftsmanship while incorporating modern functionality. The lighting fixture successfully addresses the challenge of integrating LED technology with traditional materials while maintaining thermal safety, demonstrating a sophisticated balance between heritage preservation and contemporary utility.
