MOON & ORCHID Lighting

MOON & ORCHID Lighting

MOON & ORCHID Lighting is an innovative lighting design that masterfully blends traditional Korean artistic elements with contemporary LED technology, creating a harmonious fusion between cultural heritage and modern engineering. This sophisticated lighting fixture, designed by SANG YOON KIM, draws inspiration from classical Korean poetry and paintings, interpreting the traditional motifs of the moon and wild orchid through a contemporary lens. The design consists of three primary components: an aluminum reflection board with LED lighting representing the moon, carefully crafted bamboo branches symbolizing the orchid, and a ceramic base depicting a rock cliff. The aluminum reflection board, precision-carved using CNC machinery and finished with anodizing treatment, creates a sophisticated lunar illumination effect while maintaining thermal efficiency. The bamboo branches, which can be adjusted according to user preferences, are strategically connected to the LED component through minimized joint points to prevent heat damage. Standing at 445mm in height with a width of 540mm, this lighting fixture demonstrates exceptional attention to material selection and engineering constraints, particularly in managing LED heat dissipation to protect the natural bamboo elements. The design successfully challenges conventional stand lighting aesthetics by moving away from typical robotic arm appearances, instead embracing organic, nature-inspired forms that reflect East Asian artistic sensibilities. This innovative approach to lighting design earned recognition through a Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category, acknowledging its successful integration of traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, and its contribution to contemporary lighting design that honors cultural heritage while embracing technological advancement.
