MOLT Armchair
MOLT Armchair is an innovative furniture design that masterfully blends Eastern and Western cultural elements through the concept of anamorphosis, created by designer Taylor Cheng. This sophisticated piece of furniture demonstrates a remarkable transformation in perspective, appearing as a traditional Chinese emperor's chair from the front view while metamorphosing into a Western rocking chair when viewed from different angles. Crafted entirely from walnut, the armchair showcases exceptional craftsmanship through its mortise and tenon joinery, which maintains structural integrity while achieving a minimal and lightweight appearance. The design, measuring 620mm in width, 620mm in depth, and 690mm in height, draws inspiration from the golden age of Chinese furniture design, particularly the Ming style, which embodied the fusion of Confucian and Taoist ideologies. The natural characteristics of the walnut's grain and color palette are thoughtfully utilized to emphasize the rich history of Chinese craftsmanship, while the floating armrests symbolize honor in traditional Chinese design language. The chair's distinctive feature lies in its ability to create a perceptual experience that challenges viewers' expectations, making it both a functional piece of furniture and a sculptural art piece. This cultural hybrid earned recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to furniture design and its contribution to cross-cultural design dialogue. The project, developed in California and unveiled in New York in 2016, represents a significant achievement in contemporary furniture design, demonstrating how traditional elements can be reinterpreted through modern design perspectives.
