Modern And Timeless Residence

Modern And Timeless Residence

Modern And Timeless Residence is an award-winning interior architectural project that exemplifies contemporary residential design through its synthesis of minimalist aesthetics, functional spatial planning, and enduring material selections, situated in the Zekeriyakoy district of Istanbul, Turkey, and completed in February 2021 by Sema Yazici and the Sakura Architecture team, comprising Yadigar Tanriverdi and Nurten Ozek Yildiz. This five-bedroom family villa encompasses a net indoor area of 475 square meters complemented by a 500 square meter garden and outdoor swimming pool, distributed across three distinct levels including basement, ground floor, and upper floor, each serving specific programmatic functions that respond to the diverse needs of contemporary family living. The design philosophy underlying Modern And Timeless Residence emphasizes the creation of tranquil, nature-connected spaces that deliberately contrast with urban chaos, achieved through the strategic integration of natural materials including light-colored wooden parquet flooring, Italian ceramic surfaces, marble cladding, and wooden veneer finishes that collectively establish a warm, organic atmosphere throughout the residence. The ground floor spatial organization encompasses the primary living areas including the living room, kitchen, dining area, winter garden, and guest bedroom, with the living room functioning as the compositional heart of the home, distinguished by high ceilings and a gallery void that enhances spatial volume and visual connectivity between levels. A particularly notable design element is the full-height marble-clad fireplace that extends through the gallery void, serving both functional heating purposes and acting as a dramatic vertical architectural feature that anchors the seating and dining areas, with a strategically placed mirror above enhancing spatial depth and light reflection. The upper floor accommodates the private quarters including the master bedroom with integrated walk-in closet and two children's rooms, each designed with personalized considerations for comfort and functionality, while the basement level houses a staff room, hobby area, and a distinctive relaxation space colloquially termed the man cave, which represents one of the residence's most characterful interventions, featuring comprehensive wooden paneling, a marble bar counter, custom-designed cabinetry, and brass accent details that collectively create a sophisticated masculine retreat. The design approach demonstrates particular attention to material authenticity and tactile quality, with Italian ceramics selected for kitchen and wet areas due to their durability and hygienic properties, while porcelain surfaces were employed for bathroom and kitchen countertops, combining contemporary aesthetic appeal with practical maintenance considerations. The furniture throughout Modern And Timeless Residence was entirely custom-designed and newly produced to align with the overarching design concept, utilizing a combination of natural wood veneer and lacquered finishes that ensure visual continuity and soft transitions between spaces, complemented by dynamic patterned wallpapers applied in select areas to introduce visual energy and prevent monotony. The lighting design strategy integrates modern fixtures with architectural ceiling and wall moldings, creating a cohesive illumination scheme that enhances both functional visibility and atmospheric ambiance throughout different times of day and various usage scenarios. The winter garden represents a transitional space between interior and exterior environments, featuring exposed wooden beams and a suspended wooden ceiling fan that reinforces the natural material palette while providing climate control functionality. The master bedroom, oriented toward the front garden, embodies a philosophy of serene simplicity through its restrained furnishing approach, featuring primarily the bed and wooden nightstands, allowing the spatial quality and garden views to dominate the experiential character of the room. The children's bathrooms incorporate custom-colored ceramic tiles that introduce playful chromatic variation while maintaining overall design coherence, demonstrating sensitivity to age-appropriate design considerations within the broader aesthetic framework. The conversion of the garage into the aforementioned man cave exemplifies adaptive spatial planning that responds to contemporary lifestyle patterns and the desire for specialized recreational spaces within residential environments, representing a departure from conventional garage utility toward experiential and social functionality. The design's relationship with its natural setting is carefully cultivated through the extended winter garden and strategic window placements that frame views of the surrounding greenery and swimming pool, establishing visual and conceptual connections between interior living spaces and exterior landscape elements. The color palette throughout Modern And Timeless Residence predominantly features white tones that enhance spatial luminosity and provide a neutral backdrop, punctuated by select furniture pieces in vibrant colors that introduce dynamic visual accents without overwhelming the overall compositional restraint. The project methodology reflects extensive research into the specific needs and lifestyle patterns of the client family, translating these requirements into spatial configurations and material selections that balance aesthetic aspiration with practical functionality, resulting in what the design team characterizes as spaces that feel both elegant and lived-in, avoiding the sterile quality sometimes associated with minimalist interiors. The design's temporal ambition, as suggested by its title, seeks to transcend ephemeral trends through reliance on classical proportions, quality materials, and restrained detailing that collectively aim for longevity of appeal and relevance across changing stylistic preferences. Modern And Timeless Residence received the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2025, a recognition that acknowledges designs distinguished by creativity, ingenuity, and professional execution, validating the project's successful integration of aesthetic refinement with functional problem-solving. The award designation specifically recognizes the design's skillful and creative approach, its incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, and its attention to details that contribute to quality of life improvements, positioning Modern And Timeless Residence within a broader discourse of contemporary residential design excellence. The project exemplifies how interior architecture can mediate between individual client requirements and broader design principles, creating spaces that are simultaneously personal and professionally accomplished, intimate and architecturally significant, demonstrating the potential for residential interiors to achieve both functional success and aesthetic distinction through careful material selection, spatial planning, and attention to experiential qualities that enhance daily living patterns.
