Mizu

The word Mizu has a long and varied history, tracing its origins to the Middle Chinese language which developed in the 4th and 5th centuries. It was first found in the Chinese character 'Mizu', which was the ancient word for 'water'. During the 6th century, the word started to be used in the Japanese language, and over time the character was modified to become the current form, consisting of the Kanji character for 'water'. In its current form, the character has a distinct morphological structure, with the root 'mizu' followed by the phonetic 'mi'. This provides a pragmatic meaning of 'water of life', embodying the importance of the essential component of life. Through its historical use in both the Chinese and Japanese languages, the word has come to be used throughout East Asian cultures as a term for water, and has become a universally understood concept.
