Misregistration

Misregistration is a term used in the graphic design and printing industry to describe an error that occurs when the different color layers of a printed image do not align properly. This misalignment can happen due to various factors, such as incorrect setup of the printing plates, paper shrinkage or expansion, or mechanical issues with the printing press. The result is a printed image with visible color shifts, blurred edges, or a ghosting effect, where the colors appear to be slightly offset from each other. Misregistration can affect the overall quality and clarity of the printed material, making it look unprofessional or even unreadable in severe cases. To prevent misregistration, designers and printers must carefully calibrate their equipment, maintain consistent environmental conditions, and use appropriate file formats and color management techniques. In some cases, misregistration can be used intentionally as a creative design effect, such as in the split fountain technique, where different colors are deliberately misaligned to create a gradient or color blend. However, this requires precise control and planning to achieve the desired result without compromising the legibility or aesthetic of the design. Fun fact: The term misregistration is believed to have originated in the early days of color printing, when each color layer had to be manually aligned or registered on the printing press.
