Metal Window Pulleys

Metal window pulleys are mechanical devices that are used to facilitate the movement of windows along their tracks. They are typically made of metal, such as steel or brass, and consist of a wheel with a grooved rim that rotates around an axle. A cord or chain is attached to the window sash and threaded through the groove in the pulley wheel. When the cord or chain is pulled, the pulley wheel rotates and the window sash moves along its track. Metal window pulleys are commonly found in older homes and buildings, where they were used as part of a counterweight system to make it easier to open and close heavy windows. The pulleys were mounted in the window frame and connected to weights that were hidden inside the wall cavity. The weights were typically made of cast iron and were heavy enough to counterbalance the weight of the window sash, making it easier to move. While metal window pulleys are not as common in modern construction, they are still used in some restoration projects or in homes that have retained their original architectural features. They are valued for their durability and strength, as well as their ability to add a touch of vintage charm to a home.
