Met Bookshop VI Design
Met Bookshop VI Design is a sophisticated visual identity system that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional Chinese book design elements with contemporary graphic aesthetics. This innovative design project, created by Lu Zhao and Genle Zhu, comprises dual components: a character-based logo and a graphic emblem, both serving distinct yet complementary functions for publishing and retail branches. The character logo's foundation draws inspiration from the classical Chinese phrase Jian Dao Shu Wu, incorporating traditional book cover layouts and seal designs from ancient Chinese literature. Through meticulous simplification and abstraction processes, the design maintains its oriental heritage while achieving a modern sensibility. The graphic component cleverly integrates the initials MBS (Met Bookshop) into a symbolic representation of a bookshelf containing four volumes, creating an immediately recognizable visual metaphor for literary retail. This thoughtful approach to visual identity earned the Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category in 2018, recognizing its excellence in merging cultural elements with contemporary design principles. The design's success lies in its ability to communicate both literal and metaphorical meanings while maintaining versatility across various applications, demonstrating exceptional attention to typography, cultural sensitivity, and strategic brand communication.
