Meret Oppenheim

Meret Oppenheim was a Swiss artist who is best known for her Surrealist works. Born in Berlin in 1913 to a Swiss mother and German father, she was exposed to the European avant-garde art scene from a young age. Oppenheim was eager to experiment with found objects as sources of inspiration and her most famous work was her 1936 fur-covered teacup and saucer. This work is widely known as a symbol of Surrealism and the ready-made aesthetic, and is housed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Oppenheim also produced a number of other famous works during her career such as her ‘Object’ in 1936, ‘Clouds’ in 1930, and ‘Mouche’ in 1936. Oppenheim's works continue to influence artists today and her legacy of playful and provocative work has been widely celebrated.
