Merak Residence

Merak Residence

Merak Residence is an award-winning residential interior design project that exemplifies sophisticated minimalist aesthetics and thoughtful spatial planning within a 99.1-square-meter apartment space in Taiwan. The design, conceived by Tse-Ming Wang and Catherine Lin, draws its name from the Serbian word Merak, meaning the feeling of being one with the universe through small moments of happiness. The project's distinctive features include a carefully curated entrance area featuring a dramatically lit shoe cabinet with red neon accents, serving as a metaphorical gift box that celebrates the client's passion for shoe collecting. The interior architecture employs a refined material palette based on low saturation principles, incorporating steel brush-sawn oak, natural thin mineral stones with textured surfaces, and hand-painted stucco finishes that create subtle reflective gradations. The spatial organization encompasses three rooms, a living room, a dining room, and two bathrooms, with particular attention paid to flow and functionality. The design successfully addresses modern living requirements through innovative elements such as a strategically placed kitchen island for social gatherings and an environmentally conscious electric fireplace that produces captivating flame-like effects while reducing carbon emissions. The project, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, masterfully balances dark and light elements through a sophisticated interplay of black, white, and grey tones, while strategic red accents in social areas create visual interest and emotional resonance. The thoughtful integration of materials, lighting, and spatial planning demonstrates a profound understanding of contemporary residential design principles while maintaining a strong connection to the client's personal aesthetic preferences and lifestyle needs.
