Mending Wall Grappling Hooks
Mending Wall Grappling Hooks is an innovative series of eight conceptual design objects that critically examines and responds to border wall prototypes constructed between the United States and Mexico. Created by designer Ramon Jimenez Cardenas, this Bronze A' Design Award-winning furniture design project combines artistic expression with social commentary through carefully crafted grappling hooks, each specifically designed to correspond to different border wall prototypes. The series employs materials directly informed by the wall prototypes themselves, including steel and concrete elements, with the grappling hooks fabricated from rebar - a material integral to concrete construction. Each piece features powder coating in colors inspired by native Mexican corn, creating a meaningful connection to agricultural trade relationships between the two nations. The design's technical specifications showcase varying dimensions of approximately 12 x 14 x 10 inches, with silhouettes fabricated from quarter-inch thick steel. The project's significance lies in its ability to abstract 30-foot border walls into desktop-scale objects while maintaining their essential characteristics through careful attention to unique cross-sectional details. The exposed welds and fabrication methods deliberately reference the construction processes of the original prototypes, while the functional aspects of the grappling hooks serve both practical and metaphorical purposes in addressing the concept of overcoming divisive global borders. This thought-provoking work, developed between August 2017 and March 2018, exemplifies how design can engage with complex sociopolitical issues while maintaining high standards of craftsmanship and conceptual integrity.
