Memories Of Mukden Book
Memories of Mukden Book is an innovative cultural preservation project consisting of eight meticulously crafted volumes that document and celebrate the historical significance of Mukden, the birthplace of Qing culture and an important Chinese cultural heritage site. Created by designers Na An and Yiting Cui in 2020, this sophisticated publication seamlessly integrates traditional Chinese bookbinding techniques with contemporary design elements to create a multifaceted cultural artifact. Each volume, measuring 80mm × 200mm × 20mm, introduces a distinct place of historical interest in Mukden through digital illustrations and thoughtful graphic design. The books feature an ingenious folding mechanism that allows pages to expand to 800mm × 200mm, enabling various interactive reading experiences. The physical design incorporates premium materials including rice paper, copper metal, and traditional brocade, reflecting the cultural richness of its subject matter. When assembled, the eight volumes combine to form an octagonal palace lantern structure, measuring 360mm in height and 180mm in diameter, symbolically illuminating historical memories through its form and function. The project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Print and Published Media Design category, demonstrates exceptional innovation in book design through its integration of heritage preservation, interactive elements, and artistic presentation. The work successfully addresses contemporary challenges in physical book design by enhancing both artistic value and collectibility while maintaining cultural authenticity through its thoughtful combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern design techniques.
