Meiyuan Pavilion Checkpoint
Meiyuan Pavilion Checkpoint is an innovative architectural response to the COVID-19 pandemic, designed as a modular checkpoint system for residential communities in Beijing, China. This architectural intervention, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, represents a sophisticated fusion of traditional Chinese tectonic language with modern functional requirements. The pavilion, spanning 55.8 square meters with dimensions of 9880mm x 6860mm and a height of 3920mm, employs an eco-friendly construction methodology utilizing paper tubes, plywood, and steel components. The structure's ingenious design incorporates three independent circulation paths to optimize pedestrian flow and minimize virus transmission risks, while simultaneously providing essential functions such as temperature screening, package storage, and social interaction spaces. The pavilion's construction exemplifies advanced digital fabrication techniques, particularly in its use of CNC technology for precise component manufacturing within 0.3mm tolerance, enabling rapid assembly within 24 hours. The design's structural integrity is ensured through innovative foundation solutions using wooden beer boxes filled with rocks, preventing damage to existing pavements while meeting wind load requirements. The pavilion's hollow paper-tube columns cleverly conceal electrical and internet infrastructure, maintaining architectural aesthetics while providing modern amenities. This temporary structure has evolved beyond its primary checkpoint function to become a vibrant community hub, demonstrating how thoughtful architectural design can foster social cohesion and community resilience during challenging times.
