Meditation House House & Prayer Room

Meditation House House & Prayer Room

Meditation House House & Prayer Room is an innovative architectural masterpiece that harmoniously integrates spiritual contemplation with residential living, situated on a rocky hillside in Jebaa, Lebanon. This remarkable structure, designed as a weekend retreat, exemplifies a sophisticated blend of contemporary architecture with Islamic spiritual principles, manifesting as a geometric stone mass that appears to emerge naturally from its surroundings like a fallen rock. The design comprises two primary components: a residential space and a prayer hall (Musalla), both conceived to foster a profound connection between earthly existence and spiritual contemplation. The main house features an open-plan ground level encompassing living, dining, and kitchen areas, drawing inspiration from traditional Lebanese vernacular architecture. The structure's thoughtful design incorporates sustainable elements including natural ventilation systems and rainwater collection features. A distinctive architectural element is the central roof crack, which houses a narrow stairway leading to the Musalla through a cave-like passage, evoking ancient Phoenician troglodytic architecture. The prayer hall itself is a masterwork of religious architecture, vertically excavated into the cliff and oriented towards Mecca, featuring a roofless design that creates an unmediated connection with the sky during prayer, recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category for its innovative approach to religious architecture and exceptional integration with its natural environment. The project, encompassing 530 square meters within a 60,000 square meter plot, demonstrates remarkable sensitivity to environmental impact while maintaining functional efficiency and structural integrity.
