McIntosh AV Galleria Retail is an innovative high-end audio system retail space located in Shanghai's prestigious Jing'an district, occupying 1,600 square feet of premium retail space. This sophisticated interior design project, completed in 2012, exemplifies the seamless integration of luxury retail aesthetics with acoustic optimization principles. The space features a striking architectural element known as the 'time tree,' a spiral structure that ingeniously conceals a structural pillar while serving as an artistic chronological display of significant milestones. The interior design employs a carefully curated selection of materials, including black stainless steel to convey mechanical precision and boldness, complemented by marble flooring at the entrance to enhance the luxury atmosphere. The space is functionally divided into two distinct theatre areas - a main theatre showcasing an expansive 2K sound system and a more flexible mini theatre displaying home theatre solutions. The design incorporates sophisticated technical considerations for optimal sound performance, utilizing wood elements for acoustic absorption and hard surfaces for sound reflection. Notable design elements include custom display units inspired by audio equipment components, such as oversized scroll buttons and hi-fi needles, crafted from Corian and crystal glass. The lighting scheme employs LED reflector lights to create a comfortable ambiance, while carefully selected furniture pieces, including Thomas Heatherwick's Spun chair and Herman Miller's Eames chair, echo the visual representation of sound waves through their spiral and circular forms. This exceptional retail design project was honored with a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its innovative approach to spatial design, material selection, and functional excellence.
