Mays Vegetarian Restaurant

Mays Vegetarian Restaurant is an innovative culinary establishment and architectural masterpiece located in Wuhan, China, that revolutionizes the traditional concept of vegetarian dining through its avant-garde interior design and contemporary approach to plant-based cuisine. Completed in February 2019, this 152-square-meter space was masterfully conceived by designers Chen Ling and Zhu Jiefeng, who deliberately challenged conventional vegetarian restaurant aesthetics by creating an inversed time and space concept that responds to local folklore about vegetarianism's rejuvenating properties. The restaurant's distinctive design features a sophisticated material palette of gray-black terrazzo enriched with blue crystal and pearl particles, extending seamlessly from the floor to countertops and table surfaces. The ceiling serves as a dramatic focal point, featuring an artistic interpretation of inverted earthen landscapes, enhanced by carefully arranged copper chains that create an illusion of rolling hills, while strategic mirror placement generates an infinite spatial extension. The reception area incorporates a metal-backed arc formation reminiscent of a time tunnel, guiding patrons through a transformative journey into the dining space. The establishment's Nordic-inspired decorative elements are thoughtfully integrated throughout, while the innovative use of materials, including custom-developed terrazzo created in collaboration with a local inkstone manufacturer, demonstrates exceptional attention to detail and material innovation. This groundbreaking design, which earned the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2021, successfully bridges the gap between traditional vegetarian dining culture and contemporary design sensibilities, creating a unique dining environment that challenges perceptions while maintaining functionality and aesthetic excellence.
