Mayakovsky Series for The Voice.
Mayakovsky's book For the Voice is a collection of visual poetry produced in collaboration between Mayakovsky and Lissitzky, and is a masterpiece of Lissitzky's design work. Lissitzky and Mayakovsky began working together on the project in 1923. The book contains 13 poems by Mayakovsky and is 62 pages in length. The book is printed in red and black, and features an alphabetical index on the right side of the book. Regarding the content, three complex elements are consciously controlled and displayed (implied): the words that carry voice and meaning, the visual form (the shape of the letters and other objects and the space in which they are placed), and the image of the poem itself. In this way, the words are composed to be letters, abstract forms, and ideographic landscapes at the same time. (The Vision of El Lissitzky's Constituents, p 25) Through changes in letter arrangement and form, Lissitzky's words, like his illustrations, were to serve the function of visual representation. However, Lissitzky is careful in his treatment of the clarity of the letters. Except for the title, the text of the poem maximizes intelligibility through the mechanism of asymmetrical arrangement. In addition, the letters of the title function as visual elements, but even so, they do not completely lose their intelligibility, but retain some clarity.
