Mati Basis

Mati Basis was a celebrated Israeli artist who made significant contributions to the world of sculpture, painting, and ceramics. Born in Romania in 1917, Basis began his artistic journey at the Bucharest Academy of Fine Arts in 1935. After moving to Israel, he continued his education at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. Throughout his career, Basis created numerous sculptures and outdoor installations that explored a wide range of themes, including the Holocaust, Judaism, and contemporary life. Basis's works were characterized by their emotional depth and powerful symbolism. He often used his art to express his personal experiences and to comment on the social and political issues of his time. For example, his sculpture The Holocaust depicted a group of emaciated figures huddled together in despair, serving as a poignant reminder of the atrocities committed during World War II. Basis's contributions to the world of art were widely recognized, both in Israel and internationally. He was awarded a lifetime achievement award from the International Association of Plastic Arts in 1984 and an honorary doctorate from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in 1998. His works continue to be displayed in museums and galleries around the world, and he is remembered as one of Israel's most influential artists.
