Masons’ Trowels

Masons’ trowels are hand-held tools used by masons to apply and spread mortar or plaster onto bricks, stones, or other building materials. They are typically made of steel or stainless steel and have a flat, rectangular blade with a pointed tip that is used to scoop up and apply the mortar. The blade is attached to a handle, which can be made of wood, plastic, or rubber, and is usually curved to provide a comfortable grip for the mason. Masons’ trowels come in a variety of sizes, ranging from small, narrow blades for precise work to larger, wider blades for spreading mortar over larger areas. Some trowels also have notches or serrations on the blade to help create a rough surface on the mortar, which can improve the bond between the mortar and the building material. To use a masons’ trowel, the mason first loads the blade with mortar from a bucket or mixer. They then hold the trowel at a slight angle and use a sweeping motion to apply the mortar to the building material, pressing down firmly to ensure good contact. The mason may also use the pointed tip of the trowel to smooth out any rough spots or to create a clean edge. Masons’ trowels are essential tools for any mason or bricklayer, and their use requires skill and experience to achieve a smooth and even finish. With proper care and maintenance, a good quality masons’ trowel can last for many years and provide reliable service on countless building projects.
