MARU Commercial Space,Restaurant is an innovative Japanese dining establishment that revolutionizes traditional sushi bar design through its contemporary architectural approach and thoughtful spatial arrangement. Designed by Cheng-Chen Chen in 2015, this 15-square-meter space challenges conventional Japanese restaurant aesthetics by deliberately breaking away from typical design elements such as beech wood and traditional curtains. The interior's distinctive features include a strategically placed wooden-framed window at the entrance that serves as both a showcase and a transformative visual element, effectively demystifying Japanese cuisine preparation. A notable design element is the versatile octagonal dining table near the entrance, which doubles as a display case through its adjustable height mechanism. The space employs a minimalist material palette, with walls adorned with subtle graphs and lines that evoke coastal reef imagery, creating an atmosphere that emphasizes the authenticity of the culinary experience. The design's sophisticated approach extends to the bar section, where traditional refrigerator counters are eliminated in favor of a more open, approachable layout. Stone panels arranged in a cubic pattern along the opposite wall create a cohesive visual thread throughout the restaurant. This innovative approach to Japanese restaurant design, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, represents a significant evolution in commercial space design, particularly in its ability to balance aesthetic innovation with functional requirements while maintaining cultural sensitivity.
