Marsden Hartley
Marsden Hartley, who was born in Lewiston, Maine, in 1877, was one of the leading American modernist painters of the first half of the 20th century. After studying art in Cleveland and New York, he traveled to Europe, where he adopted the principles of German Expressionism and developed his own frank and sometimes deeply personal style. Hartley returned to the United States during World War I, and his paintings of the period, such as “End of the War: Start of a New Life,” “Painting No. 49” and “Portrait of a German Officer,” reflect a sad and ironic response to the conflict. He also created several landscape paintings of his home state, including “Primitive Maine,” “Maine Coast” and “Adoration.” In the 1930s, he traveled to Mexico and painted a series of abstract works in a unique combination of modern techniques and ancient Aztec and Mayan designs, such as “Epic of the Sun” and “The White Crucifixion.” Hartley died in Ellsworth, Maine, in 1943.
