Marquise Deposit Of Rain Water
Marquise Deposit of Rain Water is an innovative architectural monument and sustainable water management structure located in Barranquilla, Colombia, distinguished by its remarkable 145-meter height, making it Latin America's tallest obelisk. This sophisticated glass and steel structure, designed by architect Ricardo De Castro, draws inspiration from the marquise diamond cut and traditional boat shapes, seamlessly integrating cultural symbolism with environmental functionality. The monument features a sophisticated rainwater collection system comprising two concrete tanks surrounded by reflective water mirrors, which serve both aesthetic and practical purposes by preventing drain line contamination while enabling water reuse for irrigation. The structure's design incorporates multiple innovative elements, including photovoltaic solar panels shaped as aluminum trees along its perimeter, metal access ramps descending between concrete walls, and a facade constructed with aluminum profiles supporting varied-shade colorless crystals. Occupying a circular base of 41 meters in diameter within a 92.25-meter roundabout, the monument encompasses 6,682.35 square meters of space, including a 200-square-meter commercial area. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design, features an observation deck at 113 meters offering panoramic views of the city's unique geography where swamp, river, and sea converge. The structure's sophisticated design includes four entrance ramps, a central circular staircase, and an elevator system, creating an engaging visitor experience while addressing critical urban infrastructure challenges through its sustainable water management capabilities.
