Mariano Benlliure

Mariano Benlliure was a Spanish sculptor who lived from 1862 to 1947. He was born in Valencia and received his artistic training at the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia, where he studied under the sculptor Francisco Domingo Marqués. Benlliure was a prolific artist who created a wide range of sculptures, from small-scale works to monumental public monuments. He was particularly skilled at capturing the human form and his sculptures are known for their realism and emotional depth. Benlliure's work was heavily influenced by the Spanish Baroque tradition, as well as by the classical sculptures of ancient Greece and Rome. He was also inspired by the works of other Spanish artists, such as Francisco de Goya and Diego Velázquez. Benlliure's sculptures often depict historical or mythological figures, as well as everyday people and scenes from everyday life. One of Benlliure's most famous works is the Monument to Alfonso XII in Madrid's Retiro Park. This monument features a bronze equestrian statue of King Alfonso XII, surrounded by allegorical figures representing the different regions of Spain. The monument is considered to be one of the finest examples of public sculpture in Spain. Benlliure's work was highly regarded during his lifetime and he received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the arts. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Alfonso X the Wise. Despite his success, Benlliure remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life. He was known for his generosity and his willingness to help other artists, and his legacy continues to inspire and influence sculptors today.
