Mariam's Library

Mariam's Library is an innovative social design project and educational facility located in Tanzania's Mwanyanya community, conceived and executed to enhance learning opportunities and community development. This architectural intervention, designed by Mai Al Busairi and Alyaa Al Roomi, encompasses an 81-square-meter space thoughtfully crafted to serve both the Beit Ras School students and the broader community. The library's distinctive design features a slanted roof ranging from 4 meters to 3.3 meters in height, specifically engineered for optimal rainwater management, while custom-perforated clay bricks facilitate natural ventilation and create engaging shadow patterns throughout the interior. The space is ingeniously divided into two primary zones: an elevated reading and study area designed like a stage to maximize seating capacity, and an open communal space that encourages collaborative learning and social interaction. The project, completed in just 34 days, demonstrates a remarkable fusion of traditional building techniques with modern architectural approaches, emphasizing sustainability and local craftsmanship. The library's development was guided by extensive research and community collaboration, resulting in a design that effectively addresses the educational needs of the region while maintaining environmental consciousness. This socially impactful project, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Social Design category, exemplifies how thoughtful architectural design can serve as a catalyst for positive social change and educational advancement in developing communities.
