Marcel Polak
Marcel Polak was a Dutch post-Impressionist artist who lived from 1885 to 1942. He is known for his depictions of landscapes and seascapes, which feature soft brush strokes, strong use of color, and a playful use of subject matter. Polak began his artistic career as a young boy, drawing local scenes in his hometown, and continued to develop his talent throughout his life. In addition to being influenced by Dutch Impressionism and the works of Vincent van Gogh and Piet Mondrian, Polak was also inspired by the Fauvist movement. This is evident in his use of bold, bright colors and simplified forms. Polak's work was well-received during his lifetime, and he exhibited regularly in the Netherlands and abroad. Despite his success, Polak's life was cut short by the Holocaust. He and his wife were arrested in 1942 and sent to the Westerbork transit camp, where they were later transported to Auschwitz and killed. Polak's artistic legacy lives on, however, through his surviving works and the influence he had on other artists.
