Manually-operated Credit Card Imprinters
Manually-operated credit card imprinters, also known as credit card imprint machines, are devices used to create a physical impression of a credit card onto a sales slip. These machines were widely used in the past before electronic point-of-sale (POS) systems became prevalent. The imprinter consists of a metal frame, a sliding carriage, and an embossing plate. The embossing plate contains the raised letters and numbers of the credit card, which are pressed onto the sales slip to create a copy of the card information. To use a manually-operated credit card imprinter, the merchant places the credit card face down onto the sales slip and slides the carriage over the card. The embossing plate is then lowered onto the card, creating a physical impression of the card information onto the sales slip. The merchant then fills out the rest of the sales slip with the transaction details and obtains the customer's signature. This process is repeated for each credit card transaction. While manually-operated credit card imprinters are no longer the primary method of credit card processing, they are still used in some situations where electronic POS systems are not available or reliable. For example, some outdoor events or markets may use imprinters as a backup method of processing credit card transactions in case of technical difficulties with electronic systems.
