MaGnesium Hub Exhibition
MaGnesium Hub Exhibition is an innovative architectural and interior design concept for a mixed-use commercial space that exemplifies the intersection of scientific history and modern exhibition design. Located in the historic Presidio neighborhood of San Francisco, this two-story facility encompasses 1,260 square meters of thoughtfully designed space overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. The concept draws profound inspiration from the revolutionary use of magnesium flash photography in scientific documentation, particularly referencing the historic transition of scientific journals from text-based publications to visual storytelling through photography. The exhibition space features distinct atmospheric designs between its two levels, with the first floor embodying a before flash dimmed environment and the second floor representing an after flash brightened aesthetic. The facility's innovative design elements include a sophisticated lobby that metaphorically represents a camera lens, complete with a mirrored ceiling installation that creates an intentional reversed-image effect symbolic of photographic processes. The permanent exhibition area showcases custom display booths inspired by vintage camera bellows and lenses, while the current exhibition space incorporates a distinctive mesh ceiling composed of eight perforated panels, symbolizing the electron configuration of a magnesium atom. The design, which won a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, masterfully integrates functional considerations such as security, merchant operations, and acoustic management while maintaining aesthetic excellence throughout its various spaces, including an audio-visual room, flexible exhibition areas, and a historically-inspired café space that pays homage to traditional military architecture. The project, completed in 2019, represents a sophisticated blend of educational, social, and workplace functionalities, featuring interactive elements such as pullout display panels, digital mapping systems, and engagement boards that enhance visitor experience and learning opportunities.
