Magic Lamp is an innovative lighting design that masterfully combines traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, drawing inspiration from the distinctive form of the Psilocybe semilanceata mushroom species. Created by furniture designer Daragh Enright in the Czech Republic, this sophisticated table lamp represents a harmonious fusion of natural forms and contemporary manufacturing techniques. The design features a pearl white shade meticulously 3D printed using plant-based PLA plastic, which creates mesmerizing spiraling concentric lines when illuminated, enhanced by carefully crafted mushroom-like gills underneath. The lamp's structure incorporates a handcrafted wooden stem, thoughtfully carved from locally sourced hardwoods from managed forests, demonstrating exceptional attention to detail in maintaining the delicate balance between form and function. Standing at 650mm in height with a 150mm width and depth, the lamp showcases innovative features including a concealed touch-sensitive dimmer switch in its metal base, offering three distinct brightness levels. The design process, completed in 2020, involved extensive experimentation with both traditional woodworking techniques and modern 3D printing technology, resulting in a unique piece that embodies ecological consciousness and artistic vision. Each lamp is individually crafted in a small workshop, ensuring uniqueness through its handmade components, particularly the stem and base. The design's excellence has been recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category, acknowledging its contribution to innovative lighting design and sustainable manufacturing practices. This prestigious recognition highlights the lamp's success in combining aesthetic appeal with functional innovation, while maintaining a strong commitment to ecological materials and artisanal production methods.
